About Iganu Wilderness Safaris

Iganu is a Swazi word for marula. The fields are dotted with the intoxicating smell of this  golden yellow fruit, close cousins to  cashew, mango and pistachio plants. It was a dietary mainstay in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia 10,000 BC and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s botanical treasures.

The fruit inhabit the landscape with about 25 non-Big 5 animal species and colourful birdlife. There are over 669 bird varieties in the Limpopo. We have African antelope such as zebra and kudu and giraffe, a firm favourite.

The privately owned lodge lies within the savannah-rich Waterberg biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located off the beaten track near Marken, a  rural village. Iganu is managed by an experienced husband and wife team who live on the property. They are jacks of all trades, seasoned in animal husbandry, bush-style cooking, hospitality and health and safety.

The communal area of the lodge comprises a well fitted kitchen with a gas stove, lounge, dining room with a library and bar.

Iganu is a gentle environment. We run our lodge in a responsible, efficient and mindful manner. Our footprint is non invasive and guided by  sustainability principles in energy management and waste disposal.

There is hardly any air or noise pollution. You can walk around freely in the indigenous garden that envelops the swimming pool. The sun is strong in the summer and gentle in the winter.  Summer days are long and hot. Rest periods are essential in the heat of the day as are lighter meals. Enjoy shade under our magnificent tree at the outdoor terrace. Winter is a comfortable time of year. The days are mild and the nights are cold. Sitting around the outdoor fireplace with a blanket is an Iganu favourite. Winter inspires delectable stews and curries, board games and family camaraderie.

A holiday at Iganu is largely about rest and relaxation. The nearest town is Lephalale (previously Ellisras) which is 70 kilometres away so bring all of your essential items before arrival.

Enjoy early morning and sunset game drives, walks, picking wild flowers and a natural, unspoilt environment. Outdoor games such as badminton and volleyball are popular.  We can also arrange a day trip to a reserve close by with elephants, buffalo and occasional cats.
